Stronger Communities Together

What we support

Many Canadian charities are taking fresh and innovative approaches to address the emerging and ongoing needs in our communities. As a socially responsible corporation, we’re proud to help them raise the bar and create lasting change.

Since community needs and their solutions do not come in tidy categories, we support initiatives that span these areas:

Arts

We believe in the transformative power of the arts, and support creative initiatives that make a social impact by delivering enriching experiences and bringing the arts to more people of all ages, backgrounds and economic means. Among the primary recipients of our funding are major arts groups that advance music, theatre, dance and the visual arts, along with organizations working to make the arts more sustainable.

Education

We see literacy, employability and youth skills development as central in responding to many of the issues facing Canadian communities. Through our support for inclusive projects, often with national scope and impact, we look to foster these and other key attributes of a well-educated Canadian population. Capital and major appeals and scholarships for post-secondary education that align with our business and the financial services industry are leading contenders for our support.

Health and Wellness

As a leading provider of health and life insurance, we take a natural interest in the health and wellness of Canadians. Capital appeals at nationally and regionally recognized health facilities that receive government and private-sector funding often qualify for our contributions. Through fellowships and awards, we support the future of research. We’re focusing on some of the leading complex, and often connected, health issues affecting many Canadians, including cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, age-related issues and mental health in the workplace.

Community Development

We look to help communities grow more vibrant and achieve their long-term sustainable visions. Through initiatives that foster leadership, develop volunteerism, and encourage community engagement and economic development, we’re supporting the priorities communities are setting for themselves. Environmental and heritage education, along with greater access to recreational programs, are strong examples of activities we believe contribute to stronger communities.

Social Services

In communities where we have offices, we support United Way Centraide to make a difference for a broad spectrum of individuals and families. We generally do not make additional or separate contributions to social service organizations or programs. At a national level, however, we also address basic needs such as food and shelter.

We generally do not fund the following, which are outside the scope of our program for community investment:

Individuals and individual pursuits

In-kind contributions

For-profit enterprises

Amateur, elite or professional sports

Projects outside Canada

Registration for sporting events

Daycares, preschools, primary or secondary schools
