Trimark investment philosophy – fixed-income team
The fixed-income team uses research, economic analysis and their expertise in credit analysis to identify the best opportunities in the fixed-income market. They focus on 3 key areas:
- Relative value analysis – Monitors differences in interest rates between federal, provincial and corporate bonds to uncover value across the different categories as well as among individual bonds. In addition, to find the best quality corporate bonds, the team researches the companies thoroughly, visits them, analyzes their competitors and follows key business trends.
- Interest rate anticipation – Monitors the relationship between interest rate trends and economic cycles, broader government activities and consumer behaviour to gain insight into potential longer-term rends in interest rates.
- Yield-curve positioning – Carefully analyzes all maturities to select the optimal combination of individual bonds.
Trimark investment philosophy – equity team
The Trimark investment team, based in Toronto, has been successfully managing investments since 1981.
The equity team adheres to the proven Trimark investment discipline, which can best be described by the phrase “business people buying businesses.” Acting as prospective business owners, Trimark managers form a proprietary long-term view of a company using independent thought and judgment. And with this proprietary view, the managers carefully evaluate 3 factors before deciding to invest:
- Business: Identify high-quality businesses that are market leaders with defendable barriers to entry, sustainable competitive advantages and strong long-term growth prospects.
- Management: Ensure managers allocate capital rationally and act in the best interest of shareholders by focusing on what is good for the business in the long term, rather than the company’s earning and share prices in the short term.
- Price: Identify companies whose shares are trading at a discount to their estimated long-term value based on the portfolio managers’ proprietary view and that offer an acceptable margin of safety.
