Great-West Life’s new 1,800 sq. ft. bike pavilion provides secure, covered storage for up to 162 bicycles.
In the lead up to Bike to Work Day on June 18, Great-West Life has completed a new bike pavilion for employees cycling to their head office on Osborne Street.
“Biking to work has really taken off in recent years, and for good reason, it’s a great way to stay fit, have fun and reduce your carbon footprint.” said Annastasia Lambert, Manager of Wellness Services, Great-West Life. “Our new bike pavilion is about ensuring cycling is accessible and secure for all employees. We want to empower people with active transportation alternatives as part of our overall commitment to investing in the financial, physical and mental wellness of our workforce."
The 1,800 sq. ft. bike pavilion provides covered storage for up to 162 bicycles – four times the storage provided by the existing uncovered bike racks. It leverages an innovative two-tier rack system to maximize capacity, while maintaining ease-of-use with a pneumatic lift to assist cyclists storing their bike in the upper trays of the rack. A bike tune-up station with specialty tools also allows employees to service their bike while on the go.
The enclosure features a concrete and steel construction to withstand harsh weather conditions and is accessible year-round for an increasing number of winter cyclists. It is enclosed with a strong woven steel mesh for added security, while retaining visibility for safety. The Pavilion is accessible via two heavy-duty gates with access card system and flanked by decorative Corten steel panels.
“We set out to design a bike storage system with increased capacity, security and simplicity,” added Don Lecuyer, Vice-President of Corporate Properties, Great-West Life. “The response has been fantastic. We’re seeing more and more bikes in the pavilion each day.”
The bike pavilion was designed by Prairie Architects and is currently open for employee use.
